Climate Connections Season Is Officially Open!

Sign up soon if you plan to participate in the 2008 FIRST LEGO League Climate Connections challenge! National registration closes Sept. 30 or when materials run out. You can download the 2008 Climate Connections challenges at the FIRST LEGO League website

Registration for the West Virginia FIRST LEGO League robotics tournament (Sat., Dec. 13) for nationally registered West Virginia teams runs from Oct. 1-31. Registered teams will receive an e-mail from Dr. Meri Cummings, tournament director, on Oct. 1. If you don't hear from her, e-mail Meri or call 304-243-2499. Teams planning to participate in more than one tournament may win prizes only in the first tournament in which they are registered.

Space Grant Funds West Virginia Robotics Event

The Center for Educational Technologies® has received a grant from the West Virginia Space Grant Consortium to host the annual West Virginia FIRST LEGO League robotics tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

The grant of $9,000 will help pay tournament expenses. The tournament will be held Dec. 13 at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV, where the Center for Educational Technologies is located.

NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium Sponsors LEGO Robotics Workshops and Tournament

Through a grant from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Dr. Meri Cummings will be offering four robotics workshops for educators and youth group leaders throughout the state as well as the annual state robotics tournament.

The first workshop, which will focus on the 2008 Climate Connections FIRST LEGO League tournament challenges, will be held Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Center for Educational Technologies® at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling.

A second workshop is set for Nov. 13-15 at the West Virginia Science Teachers Association conference in Morgantown.

Two additional LEGO robotics workshops may be requested in other locations around the state when you gather a group of 10 or more interested educators, parents, or youth group leaders. The Center for Educational Technologies will host the West Virginia FIRST LEGO League robotics tournament Dec. 13. The theme of this year's tournament is Climate Connections and involves students in learning about Earth's past, current, and future climates. This tournament is for teams of 3-10 youth ages 9-14. To learn the details about this tournament, visit the FIRST LEGO League. National tournament registration opens May 1 and runs through September, or until all slots are filled.

Volunteer tournament judges, referees, and photographers are always needed (you bring the enthusiasm, we supply the training!).

It’s a Three-peat for West Virginia Roboteers

Good things apparently come in threes as the Roboteers of Morgantown won the annual West Virginia FIRST LEGO League robotics tournament for the third year in a row.

The 2007 tournament was held Dec. 15 at the Center for Educational Technologies®. Nearly 200 youngsters ages 9-14 took part in the competition. Dr. Meri Cummings, science resource teacher at the center, served as tournament director for the third year in a row.

The Roboteers’ state championship earned them an invitation to April’s FIRST LEGO League World Festival in Atlanta. The Roboteers are coached by Earl Scime, a physics professor at West Virginia University. Team members are Luke Scime, Adam Raese, Haley Tucker, Isaac Bender, Iain MacKay, Jeremy Hunter, Amelia Bieniek, Daniel Pan, Shannon Ballard, and Tim Balvers. Serving as assistant coaches are Mary Dumas and Phillip Tucker.
