Director Contributes to Education Forum at Kennedy

Tue Sep 1 2009

Dr. Laurie Ruberg, associate director of the Center for Educational Technologies, took part in the STS-128 Pre-Launch Education Forum, Tour, and Launch Viewing Aug.23-25 at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL.

Astronaut Cody Coleman, left, with Laurie Ruberg. Coleman was a featured speaker at the STS-128 Pre-Launch Education Forum.

Ruberg leads the EdTech Collaborative, a website created by the NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future to share best practices in educational technology. The theme of the forum was "Building Bridges among Higher Education Institutions and NASA." The forum featured a number of case studies of successful NASA partnerships with universities:
  • Science and Mathematics Education Institute, Fort Hays State University.
  • Launching STEM Education Collaborations: The Sky is No Limit, Boise State University.
  • STEM from K-20: Constructing the Educational Pipeline, New Mexico State University.
  • Call Me Mister: A Teacher Leadership Program, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
Ruberg said that participants expect several positive developments to develop because of the discussions held.

The forum was scheduled to coincide with the launch of the space shuttle Discovery. However, participants in the forum missed out on the launch because the launch was delayed several days.
