October Sky Festival Celebrates Sputnik, Offers e-Missions™
Mon Oct 15 2007
Youth attending the ninth annual October Sky Festival Oct. 6 in Coalwood, WV, flew e-Missions™ from the Challenger Learning Center®.
The festival gives people a chance to meet all of the famous "Rocket Boys" in their hometown. This year's event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Sputnik satellite, the event that inspired the Homer Hickam and Rocket Boys to build their homemade rockets.
The Challenger Learning Center, located at the Center for Educational Technologies®, flew its Moon, Mars, and Beyond distance learning simulation for festival visitors. In Moon, Mars, and Beyond students in grades 3-5 play the role of astronauts aboard a ship bound from the moon to a base on Mars in the year 2080 when they are asked to use their math skills to locate a ship lost for five days in the farthest reaches of the solar system.
