Workshop to Teach Use of Engineering Software

Thu May 8 2008

Educators have a chance to learn how to build engineering software into their math and science curricula during a free three-day workshop to be held at the Center for Educational Technologies.

The Teaching for the Future: Pro/ENGINEER® Workshop will be held Aug. 6-8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is part of a series of workshops across West Virginia subsidized through a grant from the West Virginia Department of Education. The workshop is limited to 15 participants, and West Virginia teachers get priority. To register call 304-243-2491 or e-mail

Those who complete this workshop will be certified to teach the Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) Pro/ENGINEER software. Participants will receive copies of the software with permission to install up to 300 seats. Software, documentation, sample lessons, and resources will be provided during the workshop.

The workshop will give participants hands-on practice building engineering software into math and science curricula to address STEM standards and 21st century skills. The workshop will introduce participants to the use of engineering software and show them relevant ways it can be used. They'll then develop their own curriculum materials with the software to address their specific classroom needs. And they'll vet their new curriculum with colleagues and students to determine its effectiveness.

Thanks to an educational coach learning management system portal, participants will also have access to product-based training. This curriculum maps directly to the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) and NETS (National Education Technology Standards).

To earn graduate credit from Wheeling Jesuit University and PTC Pro/ENGINEER trainer certification, participants will complete an additional assignment independently after the workshop, developing a classroom lesson using Pro/ENGINEER. A teleconference with those completing the trainer-level certification will be scheduled based on teacher availability. For those seeking this additional certification and graduate credit, their lesson plan will be due by Aug. 22.
