Summer Camps Offer Space, Robots

Thu May 8 2008

Youth will have plenty to keep themselves busy with summer at the Center for Educational Technologies®, including a new camp for students in grades 1-3.

The center has announced its schedule of summer camps to be held via the Challenger Learning Center®.

New to the offerings this year is Explore Your World and Beyond, a day camp for children entering grades 1-3. Campers will explore the wonders of the universe, discover what makes each planet special, and learn why Earth stands apart from the rest. Campers will blast off for a day filled with excitement, fun, and make-and-take activities while they make new friends and enjoy the adventure of learning about space. The camp costs $15 and runs from 9:30-11 a.m. on June 30, July 29, and Aug. 6.

Another Challenger Learning Center day camp is for youth entering grades 4-7. In Return to the Moon campers will enjoy a day of nonstop excitement as they journey to the moon to explore the dusty lunar surface, launch a probe, and establish a permanent lunar base. Campers will conduct vital scientific experiments, experience unique hands-on activities, and make new friends. This camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 19, 23, 25, 27; July 1, 29, 31; and Aug. 4, 6. Cost is $30.

In addition, the Center for Educational Technologies will host the Power Robotics Weeklong Robotics Camp for students entering grades 5-8. This camp will take place June 23-27 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Cost is $250 and includes a space mission T-shirt and all-you-can-eat lunch daily. In Power Robotics campers use computers and LEGO robots to solve mission challenges involving different sources of electricity and power. They also experience reduced gravity in the Wheeling Jesuit University pool and participate in a simulated space mission at the Challenger Learning Center.
